A rambling collection of my thoughts about life, my children and crafty things

A Taunting Photo

One of my monthly clinics is held in a room where this sign appears on the wall

It’s been there for about two or three years. I know it ultimately has a good message but it irritates the hell out of me. I know exactly what I would prefer to eat. Maybe it’s because it’s a little on the patronising side. I’m not sure. Health promotion is such an uphill struggle at work and I don’t feel signs like this are particularly helpful.

It also doesn’t help that this hospital site doesn’t have a canteen or coffee shop of any description. The only ‘facilities’ consist of a solitary vending machine that only has chocolate in it. Not helpful when you’re there for an entire day and forget your lunch.

Maybe its’ purely the fact that I got back on the weight watchers band wagon yesterday.

My goals for 2011

I know I’m a week late but my new journal finally arrived yesterday. After lots of pondering I have committed pen to paper and this is what I have come up with –

  • Do more on folksy – add 3 new items a month
  • Go to EuroDisney (and arrive this time!)
  • Keep a journal
  • Blog at least once a week
  • Make a list of UFOs (unfinished objects of a creative variety) and finish them
  • Learn to meditate
  • Decorate our bedroom
  • Think less (I know this sounds woolly – I know what this means to me!)
  • Spend less time on the internet – have 2 internet free evenings a week in January
  • Finish thinking of 101 things for my dayZero list
  • Complete 25 things on the DayZero list
  • Send 365 postcards (random – why did I think of this?!)

A good hospital letter!

We had to take Samuel to the hospital last month. It was his first appointment for six months and leading up to it I’d convinced myself he was deteriorating. His hands and feet had been a poor colour and he seemed to be struggling in the very cold weather.

The appointment went well. His cardiologist agreed that he appeared worse but reassured us that it wasn’t heart related and was most probably due to the continual cold he’s had all winter. There was a student present and the explanation was given that when Samuel was diagnosed he was in severe heart failure – this was giving greater concern than his aortic stenosis. It took six months but his cardiac function eventually returned to normal and at this latest appointment it was confirmed that it remains normal.

We received the copy of the GP letter today. I’m learning that sometimes you find out things not mentioned face to face but this one was very positive. The final paragraph has made me smile lots this evening –

Sunday Stealing

Sunday Stealing: The Over the Edge Meme

1. What curse word do you use the most?
I like to combine swear words. Bollocksy-shit is the main one.

2. Do you own an iPod?
Yes, purple nano. Only half full. I don’t think I’ll ever fill it.

3. Do you still remember the first person you kissed?
Yes.

4. Would you rather take the picture or be in the picture?
Not sure. I wish I could take better pictures and generally don’t like photos of myself so I’ll go with taking them.

5. Has anyone ever called you lazy?
Yes, Steven when Samuel was 6 days old. I’d been up all night with Samuel and Eloise. The conversation is ingrained on my memory so the ‘discussion’ wasn’t a pretty one. It was the kind of conversation that made you wish men could have babies just so they had a minor hint of what childbirth and the following days are like. I’ll stop now before I ramble on too much and reveal how bitter I am about that lazy label.

6. Has anyone told you a secret this week?
No.

7. What is the first thing you notice about the someone that you are attracted to?
Not sure. Eyes I think.

8. What are you looking forward to?

Going to bed this evening. I’m shattered.

9. Do you own any band t-shirts?
Not now, I used to have loads at the height of Britpop

10. When is the last time you slept on the floor?
Can’t remember!

11. What did you do last night?
Sat up drinking until 12.30am waiting for Steven’s Grandma to get back from the hospital after breaking her wrist.

12. Do you get along better with the same sex or the opposite sex?
After living in a house of girls and a house of boys whilst at university I’d easily say the opposite sex.

13. Who was the last person to make you mad?
The family member alluded to in my previous post.

14. Who would you want to be tied to for 24 hours?
Not sure. Someone intelligent that I could have a decent conversation with.

15. T or F: All’s fair in love and war?
False

16. What’s something you’ve always wanted?
More sleep.

17. Do you enjoy spending time with your mother?
Yes and wish I could do it more often.

18. Do you want a bright yellow ‘06 mustang?
No thankyou, although Eloise would like it as she likes to spot yellow cars when we’re out.

19. Where is/are your best friend(s)?
Sitting next to me on the settee.

20. Would you rather swim in the ocean or a lake?
Neither. Not a fan of swimming and never go out of my depth. Would prefer to paddle in the sea.

So here we are – its 2011!

I’m back at home after a great New Year weekend. I’ve been visiting Steven’s family (minus Steven!) and had an interesting but very entertaining time. Describing all events would show my far too bitchy side but it basically involved a family member reveling in self-pity and attention seeking behaviour. Hilarious. The outcome of this is that Steven and I how now decided we are superhuman wonderparents with perfect children. Seriously, I have the evidence!

Anyway, looking ahead – I’m still planning on getting into writing a journal this year. Not found the right book yet (does that count as procrastination?) but will hunt out a paperchase and sort that out. No, I will do one better and get online and do it tonight!

I want to blog more. I’m struggling with getting into the habit. WordPress have obviously read my mind though and started a challenge of posting each week . This seems a good place to start and covers a Day Zero target so off we go!
